It Just Can’t Be

But it is.

It Just Can’t Be

It can’t be fifty years. But it is.

Me at The Denver Post in 1975 when I was 24, with not only a mustache but sideburns, too!

A small newspaper in California’s San Joaguin Valley did not hire me because I “looked like a Hippie.” “A Hippie who wears plaid?,” I asked. The editor there told me I’d never make it as a photojournalist because of my appearance. I’m glad The Associated Press, The Denver Post and TIME, National Geographic, Stern, Paris Match, to name only a few, all overlooked my look.

And me, at 74, last week at The River with my 8×10 camera. Shouldn’t the cameras I use get smaller as I age? If they do not…

I know what will kill me!

The photo of the Hippy was made by either John Sunderland or Ernie Leyba, two great photojournalists, then, at The Denver Post, and now.

The photograph I made with the 8×10 on this day. The River is a bit hot. I will commence the creation of a mask (Alan Ross… thank you for teaching me how to make masks) to lower the values (tonality) of the water.

At The River. It really is at The River, though it only shows a dirt road.
