I bought this Stetson at Kowboyz in Santa Fe while there with my Social Documentary class many years ago. Got it for a song. A cappella because my guitar was in Denver. It is 100% beaver. I told my friend, Suzy, who owned Kowboyz, it was worth far more than the price tag and offered her more money for it. She told me to just pay the sticker price because that hat was waiting just for me.
I was up at The River yesterday, celebrating my son Ian’s birthday by committing art. Some days you go out with a camera and don’t see a darn thing. It’s like fly fishing. I go to The River and fish it all day and nothing!!! Yet, was I not fishing?
Photography is like so many things. It is like fly fishing.
Yesterday I had all the right gear. More significant than the gear, I had the right attitude. And… nothing. Yet, was I not photographing?
As I set up my view camera for what I hoped (way different that what I know) would be a nice exposure, I set my hat on a huge granite boulder and got under the dark cloth. And… nothing.
Out from under the dark cloth I saw my hat and light falling on it. With no desire to to go home empty-handed, I made an exposure with my iPhone.
What is waiting just for you today?
My Hat and Lens Shade.
